Plans for the face lift of Rome’s Colosseum

A plan has been read out by the Italian officials to raise 25 million ($32 million) Euros which will be used for the facelift of the Rome’s Colosseum, which is the country’s iconic landmark.

Gianni Alemanno, Mayor of Rome has said that it is a big challenge and also a national and an international example of bringing together public and private funds. He also related to the restoration of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, which is multi million dollar plan completed in the year 1994 with the help of private funds.

The organizers have said that the government is looking for the potential sponsors in a six-week appeal to be launched next Wednesday.

The Italian Culture Minister Sandro Bondi has said that the work of the restoration will begin in October and last 2 years and also added in a statement that the sponsors funding the project will be able to promote their image but it should be well matched with the value and decorum of the Colosseum.

The dilapidated condition of the landmark was observed in the month of May when large amount of lime and mortar fell from its walls. The frontage of the ancient Roman arena is also damaged because of weather and is also darkened by the fumes released by the cars passing by.

The visitors can visit the monument which will be kept open during the period of renovation that includes building of a new visitors’ centre, modernizing the electrical, surveillance and lighting systems, and the refurbishment of the facade.

The egg-shaped arena was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire with 188 meters long, 48.5 meters high and 156 meters wide, with a capacity of up to 75,000 viewers.
